Food Inflation Brief – March 2021

In March 2021, food and non-alcoholic beverage prices increased by 5.7% from March 2020 and 0.8% from February 2021. The BFAP thrifty healthy food basket, which represents a more diverse basket than the CPI, increased by 8.6% from March 2020 and 1.4% from February 2021. Food inflation was mostly driven by oils and fats, along with confectionary, meat, eggs and dairy products and was mostly a result of strong underlying commodity prices globally. The moderation in food inflation since January reflects continued resilience of the Rand exchange rate.
