The African Continental Free Trade Area: Realities of intra-trade in fresh produce

The African Continental Free trade Area (AfCFTA) was signed in 2018 and entered into force in 2019. Some aspects of the agreement still need to be finalised. It is expected to increase intra-Africa trade opportunities when fully implemented. The agricultural sector is expected to benefit from the trade opportunities as it is the mainstay of most economies on the continent. Fresh produce trade consisting of horticulture and floriculture will have to overcome some of the continental challenges of non-tariff barriers, logistical challenges and competition from other suppliers in order to attain some of the opportunities. The report focuses on the status of AfCFTA market access possibilities, intra-Africa trade in fresh produce as well expanded opportunities and challenges.
